A handful of tips to guarantee your cake business success.

1/ Taking action is more important than over thinking.

Get out of your own head and stop over thinking the details. You’ll work out the details in time.  Focus on what you need to do to take action and to get started.

2/ Things don’t have to be perfect.

Otherwise this can stop you from taking action. For example try out various recipes for your cakes and get some honest feedback. Don’t
spend too much time fretting about achieving perfection and letting this hold you back from starting to sell cakes commercially.

Of course you need the cakes to taste good enough to sell (no one wants a dry cake) but it’s easy to become too picky on little details.

I started with recipes and tweaked them over time based on feedback. Have a go and see what works. This also applies to other areas too such as your website, photos, equipment. You have to start somewhere to see what works and what doesn’t work, otherwise you won’t move forward.

3/ Ask all of your questions to your ideal customer.

Friends and family mean well with their advice, but make sure you’re asking questions to those people that fit your market. For example this could be mums that have knowledge or an interest in cakes. They’ll have the answers you’re looking for as opposed to Uncle Fred who doesn’t eat or like cake. Check out online forums, Facebook pages, baking clubs, or talk to mums at the school gate etc .

4/ Follow an existing desire in the cake/ market place.

There’s a myth that you need to come up with a completely unique idea to start a business. I do agree you need to differentiate yourself but
that’s different. If someone’s not already doing your unique idea, the chances are that someone has already tried it and failed. Either there’s no desire in the market place for, let’s say, ‘Polar Bear’ cakes and/or there’s little money to be made. Do your research into what’s already working in the industry as this will save you time and money.
